fry sauce and 3.2 beer

while stopped for lunch in Delta, Utah along Hwy 50 'the loneliest road in America', I overheard the following drink order from the table behind me

Waitress: What can I get you to drink?
Man: Well, I'm not sure what my wife wants, but I'll have an iced coffee.
Waitress: Iced coffee? You know, we just had a lady ask for that and I don't know what it is.
Man: ...well...you just fill a glass up with ice and ...pour the coffee in.
Waitress: Wow, alright.

as I sat there waiting for my food I thought about how disconnected from American pop-culture this young woman must be. I also thought that I wouldn't mind being in that position. but you 'd at least think she would have seen an ad for iced coffee on TV...

at dinner that night I learned that Central Utah's best keep [sic] secret is ...HomeSpun Love.... they had provided the décor for the establishment and placed fliers on the tables to inform you of their products and location. it then occurred to me that the phrase 'best kept secret' is anoxymoronn. no one would know about a best kept secret, right? this town didn't have a traffic light and all local directions were given with respect to the 4-way stop.

please pardon our dust,

seen my ear?

well, I have just returned from my first class on the first day of the first semester of my last year as an undergraduate. an odd feeling. good news: the class, Design and Manufacturing III, might be interesting.

other good news: I have re-thought my post-graduation strategy (again). I have set a goal and it is to live in Colorado sometime soon after graduation. I will pursue an engineering career of some sort before completely ruling it out (which may still lead to journalism or another semi-related field like marketing or PR). I also plan to be a 'ski bum' in Telluride for about a year after graduation unless I immediately fall into a real job that I can't pass up. I'm thinking of driving a snow cat or being a lifty during the winter months and doing 4x4 tours when its warm.

so now I have a bit more direction. hopefully this will translate into some drive for me to complete my final year.

also, I had a great time riding from Reno to Telluride and then Telluride to Denver (where I hatched this new life plan). I will post the few pictures that we actually did stop to take when they become available.

happy school year,
your pal
